However, knowing what to bring with you can be tricky. What items should make the list for your first apartment checklist for Indianapolis?

Here’s a list of the essentials that you need to move in. You might be able to bring some of these basic items from your current home, but other bigger items might take a trip to IKEA or Indianapolis’s local furniture outlet. Online stores such as Amazon or Target are good places to find things at, too. We’ll also provide you with a brief list of helpful things that can make living on your own more comfortable.

Whether you call it the the family room or the living room, it’s the room where you’ll spend most of your time. It’s also the room where you’ll have friends and family sit in (although all parties end up in the kitchen).

Essentials:

  • Coffee table

  • TV stand or entertainment center

  • TV, stereo, or other electronics

Also nice:

  • Bookcases for books, DVDs, or accessories

The kitchen is easy for a new renter because most of your bigger items -- like the oven, refrigerator, and dishwasher -- come with your apartment. You only really need somewhere to sit in the dining area, but make sure it seats at least four. Even if you live alone, it’s nice to eat at the table with friends or family.

Essentials:

  • Dining room table and chairs (for at least 4 

  • Plates, glasses, and silverware (4 place settings)

  • Mugs

  • Mixing spoon, can opener, spatula

  • Microwave-if not provided

  • A good frying pan or skillet

  • A cookie sheet

  • A good chef knife

  • Pot for boiling water

  • Oven mitts

Also Nice:

  • Shelves or china cabinet for storing extra dishes

  • Coffee maker

  • Cooking spices

  • Dish soap and scrub brush

  • Potato peeler, apple corer, and other cooking tools

  • A knife set with stand

  • Food -- It’s always good to move in with a fully-stocked fridge

The bathroom isn’t that hard to stock, as the bath tub, toilet, sinks, and mirrors will be there already. If you’re stocking a guest bathroom, you only need toilet paper, hand soap, and a small towel. There are only a few essentials needed in your main or master bath but not as many as in your other rooms.

  • Toilet paper

  • Soap

  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, and other personal sundries

  • Shampoo

  • Bath and hand towels

  • Shower liner, curtain, and hooks
